Before you paint or drill, check your lease and ask. Many owners are happy to approve neutral paint or a few picture hooks if you ask first.
For everything else, choose reversible: removable hooks, leaning frames, peel-off wallpaper and freestanding shelves.
Take photos of the walls before you start and after you finish. They make the move-out walk-through far simpler.
